Manuscripts should be 15 to 20 pages in length, double spaced on standard bond, free of technical language, and prepared according to the
Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition (University of Chicago Press, 2006). All bibliographic information should be included in sequentially numbered full endnotes.
Please
do not use software footnote functions that imbed footnotes at the end of each page, or that autolink them to a section at the end of the document. Rather, we ask that you manually insert numbers for notes and then place endnotes in sequential, numbered order in a separate file. This is because desktop publishing software is not always receptive to word processing programs' autolinking code. You will slow down the production process considerably if you submit a manuscript that autolinks endnotes to superscript numbers imbedded in the text of the article.
Bibliographic entries should include full names of authors and editors. Please use the following forms:
Book:
David Lowenthal, The Past is a Foreign Country (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1985): 68.
Article in an edited volume:
Ludmilla Jordanova, “Objects of Knowledge: A Historical Perspective on Museums,” in Peter Verso, ed., The New Museology (London: Reaktion Press, 1989): 22-40, 25.
Article in a journal:
Kay J. Anderson, “The Idea of Chinatown: The Power of Place and Institutional Practice in the Making of a Racial Category,” Annals of the Association of American Geographers 77:4 (1987): 580-98.
Submit an original plus three copies of the article and abstract, with name, title, affiliation, address, phone number, and e-mail address on cover sheet, and an electronic copy of the manuscript and images in WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, or saved in rich text (.rtf) or .pdf format. Manuscripts may be submitted to any of the co-editors.
Images: Images should be numbered consecutively, accompanied by a separate list of numbered captions. If using copyrighted artwork, the author must secure written permission for its reproduction in
Historical Geography. Digital images may be submitted as .tiff or .jpg files, minimum 300 dpi. When formatting tables, titles should appear at the top. Titles for illustrations should appear in the captions, not in the illustrations themselves. All lettering within figures should be no smaller than 6 pts. and should be in a standard font. The editors reserve the right to return any manuscript that does not meet the requirements.
Historical Geography assumes no responsibility for damage or loss.
